Working With Children

Background

The WA Sports Federation supports initiatives that provide the sport and recreation industry guidance about how to create safe, fair and inclusive environments.  In early 2006, the Department of Sport and Recreation provided funding to the WA Sports Federation to appoint a dedicated Working with Children Project Manager.  The Manager is engaged to provide support and guidance to sport and active recreation organisations in relation to the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004.

The Working with Children legislation was implemented in Western Australia on 1 January 2006.  The aim of the Act is to deter and prevent people who may harm children from obtaining positions of trust within organisations.  The Act introduced compulsory criminal checking to ensure a consistent and high standard of checking for persons in child-related work.  It is important to note that the Working with Children Check is different to a National Police Clearance.
